Best Dog Parks in the Sarasota Area

Brohard Paw Park in Venice, Florida

Below, you will find the best dog parks in the Sarasota area, giving your dog safe, fenced areas to run free and socialize year-round. Whether you are moving to Sarasota with pets or already live here, knowing where to find quality dog parks matters for your dog’s happiness and your home’s value.

As a Sarasota REALTOR® who helps families relocate to Florida beaches, I’ve seen how much pet amenities matter when buying a home for pet owners. Of course,  it depends if the potential buyer has pets. But many do. This guide covers the top three dog parks in Sarasota County, plus tips from someone who visits regularly with my two Yorkies.

Why Dog Park Location Matters

When searching for homes in the Sarasota area or anywhere else, dog park proximity should factor into your decision, just as schools and shopping do for some homebuyers. According to the American Pet Products Association, over 65% of U.S. households own pets. A great dog park within ten minutes means you will actually go regularly, your dog stays socialized, and you meet neighbors who become friends.

Basic Dog Park Rules

Before visiting any Sarasota dog park, know the rules from Sarasota County Parks and Recreation. Keep dogs leashed until inside the fenced area. Stay with your dog. Remove aggressive dogs immediately. Keep vaccinations current (rabies required, DHPP and Bordetella recommended). Clean up after your pet. No food in play areas.

Good etiquette matters too. Watch your dog, not your phone. Bring your own water bowl. Leave if your dog shows stress or aggression. Respect separate areas for small and large dogs.

17th Street Paw Park: Sarasota’s Best Dog Park

17th Street Park Dog Park, Sarasota, FL

17th Street Paw Park at 4570 17th Street, Sarasota, FL 34235, is Sarasota County’s premier dog park. This centrally located park has two fenced play areas—one for small dogs under 25 pounds and one for large dogs. Dog wash stations, water fountains, covered seating, double-gated entries, and a walking trail make it exceptional.

Best times to visit: Peak hours are 5:00-7:00 PM weekdays for socializing. Morning hours (7:00-9:00 AM) are quieter and cooler. Midday (10:00 AM-3:00 PM) has the fewest dogs. Weekend mornings offer moderate crowds.

HOA Communities / Private Dog Parks

Pet Friendly HOA in Sarasota, Florida
Many HOA communities in Sarasota welcome pets, offering dog-friendly rules, walking paths, and designated pet areas.

If you prefer walking to a dog park without leaving your neighborhood, these master-planned communities feature private dog parks exclusively for residents:

Waterside (Lakewood Ranch) – Located in Lakewood Ranch, 15-20 minutes from 17th Street Paw Park. This neighborhood features its own private fenced dog park, lagoon-style amenities, and extensive trails. Home prices: $500,000-$1,500,000+. Monthly HOA fees typically $300-$500 include dog park access and all community amenities.

Central Park (Lakewood Ranch) – Urban-style neighborhood in Lakewood Ranch with a walkable Main Street and its own dog park areas. Home prices: $400,000-$700,000. HOA fees $200-$400 monthly. Close to pet-friendly restaurants and shops.

Del Webb Lakewood Ranch – Active adult 55+ community with a dedicated dog park and a strong pet-owner presence. Home prices: $350,000-$700,000. HOA fees are around $200-$350 monthly.

Azario Lakeside (Lakewood Ranch South) – Features its own dog park with water features and scenic walking paths. Home prices: $350,000-$700,000. Part of the larger Lakewood Ranch development with extensive trail connections.

Skye Ranch (10-12 minutes from 17th Street Paw Park) – Features a private dog park within the community exclusively for residents. This newer neighborhood opened in 2019 with pet amenities built into the original design. Home prices: $350,000- $ 2.500,000. HOA fees of $360-$450 per month include dog park access. The community hosts annual pet events, such as Howl-O-Ween costume contests. Also, this neighborhood has miles and miles of walking / biking trails.

Wellen Park neighborhoods (South County, 25 minutes from 17th Street) – Multiple neighborhoods within Wellen Park include their own dog parks. Neighborhoods like Grand Palm and West Villages have dedicated pet areas. Home prices: $300,000-$800,000+. Newer construction with modern pet-friendly home designs, including tile flooring and fenced yards. HOA fees vary by neighborhood. This neighborhood is located not in Sarasota, but I decided to include it in this blog post, too. It’s located on the border of Venice and North Port.

Stoneybrook at Palmer Ranch (5-10 minutes from Lakeview Paw Park) – This Palmer Ranch neighborhood has community dog areas and direct access to the Legacy Trail. Also, a great trail to talk with dogs. Home prices: $400,000-$700,000. HOA fees are around $250- $400 per month.

Benefits of HOA communities with private dog parks: Walk to the dog park without driving, less crowded than public facilities, often better maintained, exclusive use by neighbors you know, additional amenities like trails and parks, and a sense of community among pet owners.

Important considerations before buying in HOA communities: Higher monthly HOA fees ($150-$500+), stricter pet policies may include breed restrictions, weight limits (commonly 50-75 lbs max), limits on the number of pets (typically 2-3 max), pet deposits, or monthly pet fees for renters. Always review complete HOA documents and pet policies before making an offer. Some communities grandfather existing pets but enforce restrictions on new residents.

Brohard Paw Park Venice

Off-Leash Dog Beach

Brohard Paw Park - Dog Beach Park in Venice, Florida
Brohard Paw Park – Dog Beach Park Venice, Florida

Brohard Paw Park (also called Brohard Beach Dog Park) at 1600 Harbor Drive South, Venice, FL 34285, is the only beach in Sarasota County where dogs can run off-leash and swim in the Gulf. Located 30-35 minutes south of downtown Sarasota, this is THE dog beach that Sarasota-area pet owners drive to regularly.

Important clarification: While Venice has a main municipal beach (near Sharky’s on the Pier) that does NOT allow dogs on sand, Brohard Paw Park is a separate designated dog beach area in Venice where dogs are welcome. Don’t confuse the two—only Brohard allows dogs on the beach.

Park features and facilities:

  • Designated off-leash dog beach area (approximately 100+ yards of Gulf beach)
  • Fenced transition area between the parking lot and the beach for safety
  • Multiple outdoor dog shower stations (essential for rinsing salt and sand)
  • Free parking (rare for Florida beaches—most charge $5-10)
  • Clean restrooms and water fountains
  • Covered picnic pavilions with tables
  • Waste bag stations and trash receptacles
  • Benches for relaxing while dogs play
  • Generally calm Gulf surf (protected by offshore sandbars)
  • Open daily during daylight hours

What to bring: Multiple towels (you’ll need at least 3-4), plenty of fresh water, a collapsible bowl, sunscreen for you, pet-safe sunscreen for light-colored dogs, a beach umbrella or pop-up shade tent, an extra leash, poop bags, treats for recall training, and a basic first aid kit.

Best times to visit: Early morning (7:00-9:00 AM) offers the coolest temperatures, the smallest crowds, and the best conditions for nervous dogs. Late afternoon (4:00 PM-sunset) brings beautiful lighting and social atmosphere as temperatures cool. Avoid midday entirely during summer—sand gets hot enough to burn paws, and sun exposure becomes dangerous.

Peak season considerations: November through April (tourist season) brings bigger crowds, especially on weekends. Arrive early for parking. The summer months (June-September) are hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Plan morning visits only during the summer.

Safety essentials: Always test the sand temperature with your hand before letting your dog walk—if you can’t keep your palm flat on the sand for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for paws. Watch for jellyfish, particularly July through September. Rinse dogs thoroughly with fresh water after Gulf swimming (saltwater can irritate skin and cause stomach issues if ingested during grooming). Monitor constantly for overheating: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or disorientation. Not all dogs swim naturally—consider a dog life vest for first-timers, especially short-legged or heavy-bodied breeds. Keep dogs away from fishing lines and hooks left by fishermen.

Beach rules: Dogs must be on leash in the parking lot and until entering the designated off-leash beach area. Owners must remain with their dogs and maintain voice control. Aggressive dogs must be removed immediately. Clean up all waste (yes, even on the beach). Respect other beachgoers and their dogs. No glass containers on the beach.

Why people buy homes in Venice for Brohard Beach: Some of my real estate clients specifically search for homes in Venice or South Sarasota County because of Brohard Beach access. When you can reach the only dog beach in the area in under 30 minutes, weekend beach trips become part of your regular routine instead of special occasions. This transforms pet ownership from just having a dog to living a true Florida beach lifestyle with your dog.

    Venice neighborhoods near Brohard Beach:

    • Venice Island (1-3 miles): Walking or biking distance to the beach. Prices $350K-$900K for single-family homes
    • South Venice (3-5 miles): More affordable options. Prices $250K-$450K
    • Venetian Golf & River Club (2 miles): Upscale golf community. Prices $400K-$1.2M+
    • Woodmere Park (3 miles): Family-friendly neighborhoods with fenced yards are common. Prices $300K-$600K
    • Venice East (4-6 miles): Budget-friendly options. Prices $250K-$400K

Directions from Sarasota: Take US-41 South (Tamiami Trail) for about 20 miles to Venice. Turn right (west) on Venice Avenue, then left on Harbor Drive South. The beach is at the end of Harbor Drive. Total drive time: 30-35 minutes from downtown Sarasota, 25 minutes from Palmer Ranch, 45 minutes from Lakewood Ranch.

Other Venice beaches (NOT dog-friendly): Venice Municipal Beach (at the Venice Fishing Pier near Sharky’s restaurant) does NOT allow dogs on sand—only in parking areas and on boardwalks with leashes. Caspersen Beach, Service Club Park Beach, and Manasota Beach also prohibit dogs on sand or have very limited hours (before 10 AM only). Brohard is your only true dog beach option in Venice.

Lakeview Paw Park: Quiet Dog Park Option for Small Dogs

Lakeview Paw Park at 7150 Lago Street, Sarasota, FL 34241, offers a peaceful alternative to busier parks. Located near I-75 and Bee Ridge Road, it features separate small- and large-dog areas with mature shade trees and grassy surfaces.

Perfect for: Small dogs under 25 pounds, older dogs, puppies learning park behavior, reactive dogs in training, or anyone preferring quieter settings. The small dog area rarely has more than 5-6 dogs at once. But any size of dog is welcome here.

    Other Notable Parks

Paw Park at Woodmere Park (3951 Woodmere Park Blvd, Venice) serves south county with separate small/large areas and standard amenities.

Nathan Benderson Park (Suncoast Parkway near University Parkway) offers 3+ miles of paved lakeside trails where leashed dogs are welcome. Great for leash training. Visit nathanbendersonpark.org.

Bayfront Park and Marina Park – 5 Bayfront Dr, Sarasota, FL, 34236. Love this place for walks with dogs. There are nice paths and beautiful views of the marina and the ocean.

    Choosing the Right Dog Park

Match the park to your dog’s needs. Small dogs do best at Lakeview or in the small-dog sections at 17th Street. Shy dogs should start with quiet times at Lakeview. Social butterflies love peak hours at 17th Street. High-energy dogs need 17th Street or Brohard Beach. Beach-loving dogs must visit Brohard.

Keep vaccinations current. Bring your own water bowl. Watch for overheating signs: excessive panting, drooling, seeking shade, or aggression. Leave if your dog shows aggression, seems stressed, or if others are not supervising their pets properly. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends regular wellness checks for dogs frequenting dog parks.
