Difference Between Realtor vs Real Estate Agent

In Florida, the terms “Realtor” and “real estate agent” are often used interchangeably. Do you think they are both the same? Both words do hold distinct meanings within the real estate industry. Both are licensed professionals authorized to facilitate real estate transactions. A Realtor in Florida, such as myself, carries an additional badge of membership in the National Association of Realtors (NAR). That is a big difference. Real Estate Licensing Agent and REALTOR Membership

A real estate agent is licensed to help clients buy, sell, or rent properties and must follow state licensing requirements.

A Realtor is a real estate agent who follows state licensing requirements, but also is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and has to follow NAR strict Code of Ethics.

Real Estate Code of Ethics

Realtors are bound by the NAR’s Code of Ethics, which requires them to uphold certain standards of professionalism and conduct in their dealings with clients and other real estate professionals.

While real estate agents are also expected to follow ethical standards, they may not be bound by the same rigorous guidelines as Realtors.

Access to Resources

Both real estate agents and Realtors have access to similar resources and tools to assist their clients, such as MLS listings, market data, and professional networks.

However, Realtors may have additional resources available to them through their membership in the NAR, including educational opportunities and specialized training programs.

Real estate agents represent their clients’ interests in transactions, providing guidance and assistance throughout the buying or selling process.

Realtors, as members of the NAR, are committed to advocating for their clients’ best interests while also upholding the principles outlined in the Code of Ethics.

Real Estate Professional Designation

The term “REALTOR ®” is a registered trademark of the NAR and can only be used by real estate agents who are members of the association.

Real estate agents who are not members of the NAR do not have the right to use the Realtor designation in their professional title.

Real Continuing Education and Training

Realtors are encouraged to participate in ongoing education and training programs offered by the NAR to enhance their skills and knowledge in the real estate industry.

While real estate agents may also pursue continuing education opportunities, they may not have access to the same level of specialized training and resources available to Realtors.
